Preschool Morning Program (Hours are 9:00 am to 12:30 pm)
We have created a fun and educational half day bilingual English/French preschool program. Our program runs Monday thru Friday from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm from September 1st to June 30th. Our preschool program follows the Sooke 62 school district calendar. We are closed on statutory holidays, Pro-D days, early dismissal days, Spring break and Christmas break weeks. Please visit the Sooke62 website calendar for more information.
Our morning preschool classroom consists of 20 children with two Early Childhood Educators. We have divided our preschoolers into two age groups to help us achieve our curriculum goals and cater to each groups developmental and cognitive levels.
At Children of the Island we believe that kindergarten readiness should be looked at from a realistic point of view. This means taking into account how children learn, and what’s currently expected of children in kindergarten. Children need to have the tools to start kindergarten in a positive way, as it sets the foundation for the rest of their school experience. While some may not always agree with this philosophy, a child’s development (in all areas) must be considered when looking for kindergarten readiness programs. We believe that focusing on a child’s natural curiosity, helping them develop fine motor skills, teaching and guiding them to develop self control, letting them be independent and try new things, teaching self care skills and building confidence are what we feel are the major components of being Kindergarten ready! We will also be working on learning our alphabet, recognizing our names, shapes, colours and numbers. Academic readiness is only one small part of being ready for kindergarten!
