Our Center

Ideally situated on the Old Island Highway, Children of the Island is one of the most accessible childcare centres on the Westshore. With the Galloping Goose walking trail connected to one side of the property and the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre just across the road, our center is well positioned to meet your family’s needs.

From the moment the front gate is opened, your family will be swept away by the creative and genuine nature of our centre as you enter our play space. An open area that features 4 different environments to play within, and a never ending list of activities, our custom-built tree house is usually the first thing your child will notice. Hidden amongst the trees, our tree house sets the tone for all the adventures that await, and the “place to be” during our many outdoor times. Traversing the wooden walkway, parents will soon find themselves at the front door, where just on the other side, awaits the main hub of activity for our centre. Housed here is our main office, transition area, and most importantly… our daily lunch menu!

Children then divide off into their own spaces based on age to begin their days. Each space contains a tailored learning environment designed with care and attention to encourage and stimulate your child’s physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and artistic growth.

Our motto here at Children of the Island will always be ‘families first” and we have ensured our centre reflects that motto in every way we can. We encourage you to come and explore these spaces for yourself and learn all about what Children of the Island has to offer. Call us today for a tour.

Shannon Kier
- Manager, ECE - Early Childhood Educator

My name is Shannon Kier and I am the Manager at Children of the Island Childcare Centre/Centre de Garde les Enfants de L’Ile. I have many years of experience working in the education and childcare field. I attended Malaspina University-College from 1997 – 2003 and completed the concurrent Bachelor of Arts program. I have also completed an Early Childhood Education and care program to supplement my Bachelor Degree in Education. My formal education has provided me with a solid knowledge base in child health, learning, and development.
My work experience, along with my education, has given me the foundation and skills necessary to be a well-rounded early Childhood Educator. Independently, and as a team member, I have demonstrated the ability to observe, organize, and evaluate strategies with the best interest of the children in mind. I strive to provide a variety of learning experiences that will foster physical, mental, social and emotional development. I have attended numerous professional development opportunities and have had the opportunity to advocate for childcare with the Childcare Advocacy Association of Canada. I am also a member of the Early Childhood Educators of British Columbia (ECEBC)

- ECE - Early Childhood Educator
Hello! My name is ODE and I am one of the 3 yr to 5 yr group teachers.
I am a 2015 graduate from the Early Learning and Care program at CDI College.  I decided to enter the field of early childhood education because I have a passion for helping people and spending time with children.  I began volunteering with children in 2014 and have continued in the field ever since. I not only enjoy assisting children in learning about their environment in French, but I love when the children can help me learn new ways of seeing and doing things. Their curiosity , thirst for knowledge and independence are so refreshing. They  are always  learning, so I am always learning.
A little more about me: I grew up in Cameroon and moved to Victoria after graduating from University with my master in Business Law. I Speak fluently French and I enjoy reading ,cooking dancing, singing and watching movies.
I am fairly new to the centre and I am so eager to continue teaching here. Everyone welcomed and embraced me from the beginning and made me feel right at home.
Cynthia Lafreniere
- ECE IT  - Early Childhood  Educator with Infant/Toddler specialty
I have been working with Infants and Toddlers for over 3 years now and thoroughly enjoy their company. So much growth happens in the first years and I feel honored to be a part of it. It is my pleasure to encourage, nurture, support them in a positive bilingual environment.
I grew up in Northern Ontario in a bilingual town and my family comes from Québec. I have lived in Victoria for 5 years now. I enjoy walking outside, going on bike rides through the Galloping Goose, and visiting all the lovely beaches nearby. Taking walks along the beach I always find such interesting things such as shells, there are never two the same, which makes me think of children. Each child has so much to offer.
Children are full of ideas and ready to discover the world around them, to understand, to learn, they are full of questions and it is my pleasure to meet their expectations. When a child needs help I will not do it for them but instead I will guide them through the situation so they gain the knowledge and grow in self esteem.
I sincerely wish to give my best to your little bundles of joy and look foward to getting to know all of you!
